| If you're self-employed, you have to fill in a Self Assessment tax return every year. You are required by law to keep records of all relevant information, both income and expenditure for at least five years and ten months after the end of the tax year the records relate to. You can be charged up to £3,000 for failure to maintain or retain the records you need to make a tax return. |

Remember, if you have any income that is not taxed at source, like rents or freelance earnings, you may need to complete a tax return.
